A significant proportion of my "upgrades" have been to slightly larger than normal rooms with some undesirable characteristic: on the first floor and closest to the lobby, poor view, etc. That said I have scored some excellent upgrades as a non-elite, usually when the stay is on the long side (3+ nights.) I'm almost always very polite, which I'm sure helps. It always shocks me how many people are not.
