I just utilized UA's emergency/sickness/death policy on Saturday to reschedule a mileage run I had planned for Tuesday (funeral is on Tues) after the death of a family member. They waived the change fee (after providing funeral home name and number). They even let me change origin and destination, allowing me to avoid a 3+ hour ride in hell's chariot from ORD to BOI.

BTW, the $50 processing fee seems to have disappeared. I was only charged the fare difference.
