I will be flying to MEL next year too so it's nice to learn this info. When I fly for work, I pay, but 2-3 times a year whenever I go someplace Ms Shine would also want to go I try to use miles or points - which makes it complicated because that means I will have to pay to fly the best/most reasonable/available Award itinerary either via SM or MRs and not necessarily the one I want to fly.
One of the "perks" of SkyPesos is that after hours of effort, you might find that the only way to get where you want to go is by flying strange combinations of carriers and making "interesting" connections. (This is not always the case. I have a perfectly sane FRA-ICN-MEL//SYD-KUL-LHR(stop)-AMS-FRA booked with minimal effort, and as a PM, I'll move the LHR-AMS-FRA bit to a time when I actually want to go to Germany at no extra cost.)
If you're not doing it as a way to bring someone with on a work trip, you can leverage this to your advantage by spending 23 hours 59 minutes in a city making a "connection" at no extra charge. I'm contemplating putting something like that together for my next big redemption, although I'm not sure how successful I'll be once I start looking into visa regulations in Asia.
