I'll guess at this one. I'll say TWA because they wanted to illuminate the tail for marketing reasons. IMO, the tail illumination replaced the running light on top of the tail fin of Boeing jets so that the entire tail would be visible at night.
lol this is true, though pan am quickly followed suite by adding the lights and so did many other carreirs. It is a common Misconception that the lights are for safety.
TWA was also the first airline to show an inflight movie
