Alliance membership is, at heart, intended to produce marketing benefits. So if a question is asked about how VS stays afloat despite not being a member of an alliance, the answer lies in the strengths that it does have in marketing terms, and how much of its actual audience does not need the benefits that an alliance would bring.
As for the actual service quality, may I reiterate what I've said elsewhere: VS is one of the top long-haul operators in the world, and it deserves to have a long term future.
And yes: I have flown VS and I'm always alert to the possibility that I may choose to do so again. But alliance benefits do make it hard to take up that option - and that feeds back into my earlier point.
