If it's the case that VS at LHR relies no more heavily than (say) BA does on the UK leisure traveller (particularly package holiday purchasers), then that would make it even less surprising that VS "has managed to stay afloat" for so long. It does have some good things going for it, not least in marketing terms, even though it is not an alliance member and has deliberately tried to stay out of them.
