I actually prefer PVG over NRT simply because of the shorter connecting flights for me to generally SZX or CAN vs. NRT. Having said this, PVG is signifantly more challenging than NRT for a connection, as you have to enter China and then leave the country again. Not impossible, but it requires sufficient time and more walking than NRT. I have not found it any more difficult to upgrade to PVG vs. NRT.
