I have redeemed miles from more than 20 different FF programs and there always is a logical system used to compute YQ. I do not yet have enough experience with A3 to know what logical system A3 uses. With most airlines the YQ charges mirror revenue tickets. For example, before calling BMI to redeem miles for a given itinerary, I have calculated what the total taxes and fees should be on ITA software. If I get a good BMI agent, they will quote me the same amount as I was expecting. If a bad agent gives me a higher amount, I will challenge their calculation until they correct it. The amount charged is not random.
