I believe that this hotel is in non-compliance with the Marriott Rewards program and have written to Customer Service the following and will let you know if I obtain a response.
As a long-standing member of Flyertalk.com, I am writing to you to express my great concern about the subject hotel's violation of its guarantee of lounge access to Gold member guests.
Apparently, the hotel has been stating that their "lounge" is not a "lounge," but instead is a private club which can deny Gold members admission if they are not in a "Club Room" at the hotel; however, Platinum members face no such arbitrary restriction, even if they are not upgraded to a "Club room," as they, and they alone among Marriott Rewards elite members, are considered "VIP" guests and are, therefore, permitted such access.
This is a clear violation of the Marriott Rewards program rules.
To wit, the following information is plainly listed on your website:
"Guaranteed Concierge/Executive/Club Lounge Access* at JW Marriott, Autograph Collection, Renaissance Hotels and Marriott Hotels & Resorts during normal hours of operations: Monday to Friday. Outside the U.S. and Canada, continental breakfast is available 7 days a week. For JW Marriott, Autograph Collection, Renaissance Hotels and Marriott Hotels & Resorts without a Concierge/Executive/Club Lounge, Elite Members will still receive a complimentary continental breakfast for weekday stays, Monday through Friday; simply show Membership Card and room key in the hotel restaurant.
*Not available at resort locations."
As you well know, different hotels label their lounges by various names, and Marriott Rewards had astutely sought to insure that its Gold and Platinum elite members would not be denied access to such areas by clearly indicating that lounge access is to be guaranteed to such members whether or not the hotel chooses to identify its lounge by designating it as either a Concierge or Executive or even a Club lounge. In this matter, the operative word is "Club" and it is exactly the one that used by both Marriott Rewards and the Renaissance St. Pancras to describe the area now forbidden to your loyal Gold membership. To reiterate, the above paragraph clearly states that all Gold members are entitled to such access without restriction.
I find it absolutely amazing that the Renaissance St. Pancras continues to flout the above rules, especially when its designation of its lounge as a "Club" was clearly contemplated and so identified by the drafters of your governing language on this issue. Since guaranteed access of Gold members to the Club is forbidden by the hotel, the Renaissance St. Pancras is clearly in non-compliance with the terms and conditions of the Marriott Rewards program.
As London will be hosting the Olympic games next summer, I think it important that this matter be resolved immediately so as not to further disappoint or diminish the expectations of your Gold members who now form a significant backbone of your program, as a result of the ongoing global recession, which has impacted business and leisure travel alike for the last four years.
Marriott Rewards had the foresight to use language to avoid the very shenanigans the Renaissance St. Pancras hotel has instituted to avoid its obligations to what I once believed was a greatly valued group of your most loyal members. As a member of such group, I for one would like to know what you plan to do to immediately rectify this significant issue?
Yours sincerely,
