I haven't been to the mainland in years. From what I remember about Guangzhou, there isn't too much to see a Pegasus8228 mentioned. The markets may be a good place to see (and smell) the local fare.

I do remember going to sme restaurants in a classical chinese setting. The restaurant is housed in a walled court with tables around a sculptured garden. A guide book may be able to give you some suggestions.
