Interlining bags between tickets and printing boarding passes up-line for an onward flight don't make the trip a single ticket.

I don't know of any carrier that will actually combine separately issued tickets into one.

I'm betting that the "connecting" terminology in this case is defined based on how the ticket is issued, not based on what you actually fly. In other words, you cannot create the necessary connection by purchasing the other ticket and presume that will link the two flights for the purposes of earning the flight credit.
