Day of paid upgrades on BA did and do earn TP!
You just have to call the exec club after your trip to let them know that you bought a same day upgrade, they will see it in their system and they will credit the TP..

I'm pretty sure that for AA is the same.. If you pay for the upgrade you shouldn't be ticketed in a reward fare..
