No, the "falling into the ocean" trick is definitely a West Coast thing...the East Coast is going to be wiped out by an enormous tsunami caused when part of La Palma (one of the Canary Islands) collapses into the Atlantic. It's quite poetic really...in one instance the land sinks into the ocean and in the other the ocean rises up to reclaim the land.
