As a top-tier status holder in both programs, AA is the clear winner when it comes to generous promos. That's because as the smaller airline with the cost disadvantage they want to make sure they keep their most profitable customers and don't lose them to the larger UACO or DL.

UA has appeared somewhat reluctant to engage in too many promotions, but on the recent SFO-ORD one for instance, they restricted it to W and higher fares. AA's promo does not. Another difference is AA's promo lasts through March 31st, and UA's only until January 31st.

That's all well and good when there's a decent W fare, but the amount of $ I paid for that ticket basically gives me the same CPM as it would for two roundtrips to ORD.

The only advantage to it is to requalify for 1K next year on lesser flights.
