I really do enjoy taking the trains in Europe when I have the time, as it's really not something I can conveniently do on the west coast of the U.S., and after 10 years of doing this I still enjoy the "rail experience" in Europe. I've used rail before in the U.K., Ireland, Sweden, Denmark, Italy, France, Switzerland, and some others I can't think of right now.
Already have the rail pass in hand and will make good use of it. I fly home from Dusseldorf on Feb 20, so once I leave Salzburg I'll have 4 additional days to use it within Germany. Very likely will base myself in Baden Baden or Bacharach before I end up in Dusseldorf the last few days.
Last year I did an overnight train in a sleeper from Freiburg, near the Swiss border, all the way over to Dresden. This was my first time on an overnight train, and I hardly slept (so I'm back to day trips).
