Have done Oktoberfest before and have no desire to repeat it.
I have heard that many of the smaller festivals are a lot more enjoyable.
I was recently chatting to a guy about attending one this year with a group of my friends. He mentioned it was in August, about 45 minutes or so from Munich heading towards Austria.
I have searched google and the such but have been left confused! (not overly difficult!!)
Could anyone help and point me in the right direction and all tips are extremely welcome!

Oktoberfest in Munich is one of a kind. All around Bavaria you will find small events around spring (first week of may) and late summer.
Whenever go east of Munich, you are heading towards Austria. You cannot miss it.
There are quite a few local and small beer festivals, even east of Munich. About 45 Minutes away is Rosenheim, which is already mentioned. Other locations which are about 45 minutes east of Munich are Mühldorf am Inn, Frasdorf and Kolbermoor. Dates for these festivals are to be found at
