There are people whose qualifications to analyze these decisions far exceed an internet connection and too much time on their hands.

When Delta calculated doing a massive fleet renewal, they determined they would have to operate the new aircraft 30% more per day to break even on their current operating costs. This, in turn, would increase their costs of labor.
That's one of the principal reasons they decided to stick with the current fleet and modernize it.
