I'd also suggest looking at postponing the trip past August (the mini-trip to Canada is a great idea). Not to stereotype librarians, but if she enjoys museums then a great time to go is mid December (around December 15-20th. People haven't started their holiday travel yet, so it's a great time to be a tourist, very few lines. The big drawback is that the days are short. But, that could be her Plan B if she can't get the tickets for August.
