Hence a Boeing 747-438 was a 400 series 747 delivered to Qantas, a Boeing 707-321 was a 300 series 707 delivered to Pan Am, etc.
To expand on that a bit further, the customer codes indicate the layout and options with which the aircraft was originally built, including number and location of lavatories, number and location of galleys, engine type and manufacturer, etc.
