Years ago my father (who was a VERY inexperienced flyer, maybe 10 flights total) was caught in a LH strike at FRA. LH told him to take a hike and come back the next day. I have no idea how he got the idea, but he literally ran to the train and T2, showed his LH award paper ticket, and flew on the BA B767 with no endorsements whatsoever.
The paper ticket (before I can recall different codes) could be used almost like paper currency. I certainly recall arriving at LHR and seeing a completely different airline (JAL) leaving earlier than the one I booked (to CDG) and simply asking to be transferred which JAL were happy to do. As it happens I recall the flight clearly because I was the only passenger on the flight!
