AA still refers to its Hawaii flights as "HFS" although this doesn't mean anything much anymore. However, I WILL say that the HFS is equivalent (and sometimes better) than 2-class F and 3-class J AFS services when it comes to food & beverage. In fact, the Hawaii service is MUCH BETTER than AA's standard domestic service and the flight attendants are typically more attentive and in much better spirits. Seeing as Hawaii flights are staffed with international crews, they are typically more senior, but I've noticed that they have always been some of the best.
HFS offers an entree-sized "appetizer/salad" (without protein) in lieu of the appetizer + smaller salad available on AFS flights. The entree portions are similar in quality and quantity, although there is always a Sam Choy-inspired "Hawaiian option." There are always two entree choices: one usually being a pasta and the other being a Hawaiian fish, chicken, or beef entree. I had the teriyaki steak on my recent DFW-HNL and the macadamia nut-crusted chicken breast has also been making frequent appearances. There is a teriyaki-glazed salmon that seems to come up a lot too. The dessert is a choice of made-to-order sundae or fruit/cheese (fruit/cheese is offered as the second service on DFW/ORD flights).
Of course, morning flights are a bit different from lunch/dinner. Like AFS, there is a cereal choice and a hot meal choice. The hot option is Hawaiian themed and I've seen macadamia nut pancakes, a sweet bread french toast, and a new item - portuguese sausage quiche. The entree is served (as with all other AA breakfasts) a fruit plate, choice of pastry/bread, and drink. Prior to landing, they do a drink service with warm nuts and baked on board cookies, although I've seen several variations in when the cookies and nuts are served -- some FAs serve the nuts before breakfast since it's "brunch" which others follow the menu and serve them with the final drink service.
As you already know, back in Y, there is no such thing as HFS and it's just like any other AA domestic flight, except they provide free blankets.
