Once you get upgraded, you have a seat assignment. The Confirmed Awaiting Seats list is for people who are in Coach, checked in, but without a seat assignment.
This happens on a significant number of UA flights -- flights that are either overbooked, or flights with a low Elite load since E- is overbooked, and people are not eligible for or did not purchase E+.
It's going to happen more frequently when CO gets E+.
