Do you, or did one of the other party in the earlier booking, have status with BA which allows free seat selection for passengers booked under that specific reference number?

You need Silver or Gold status (or, equivalent with OW, I believe - tho someone will I am sure correct me) to be able to select seats (normally). Unless you are travelling in First, in which case you get free seat selection.
