The newer HIX's in North America are great values.
I recently completed a 2 day stay at HIX Ottawa Airport.
New hotel. Spotless.
Booked standard. Upgraded to a suite despite the hotel being full (another member of my group could not book a room).
The "suite" is about 600 square feet. It is a divided single room with a sitting area, a division in which the bathroom is located, and a sleeping area.
The first and third areas have large screen HGD t,v,'s. Outside the "division area" is a separate sink & faucet, a microwave, and a refrigerator. Of course, internet is free.
This is generally standard fare.
My experience hs been repeated at many Canadian HIX's and in the northern states in the U.S.
My experience in Europe is limited to the HIX in Cheltenham. The room was positively "Spartan". Very small. No chest of drawers. Good breakfast and bar/internet offer and cheap. Good value if you only want a bed.
You'll often pay for the HIX experience in North America---but to me, it's worth it
