I say ask when checking in, have the second ticket in hand and see if they will interline the bags for you.

They may say no and require you to recheck the bags, if that's the case, time will be quite tight unless the plane is early to get the bag, head over to US air, recheck the bag, and clear security. You can use that to help plead your case.
