Got an EF notification of an available seat so I grabbed it. The F cabin is emptying out; I wonder if I lost an opportunity for VIP + op up?

Yes, typically when a VIP is applied I get an email ticket confirmation a day or so before the flight. Still 3 more days so I'm not worrying yet.
