A second question - what do you think about breaking the flight in Rome for 24 hours, staying in an airport hotel, to allow time to get a good night's sleep? Even if flying business class, this is a long flight. There are some flights that have a 19-hour layover between flights.
Just make sure you are not in these fare classes on Alitalia:
Class Exclusions: U, Z, E, F
As for stopping in FCO: I would just get it over with. There is something to be said for avoiding "airport stress" and you will create it by making a second opportunity to be late for your flight, get stuck in security, get drunk and sleep through your wake up call, etc. Generally I just want to get there and relax at that point. My 2 cents.
