I am in agreement with the general train of thought here. Great service should be so discreet as to not be really noticeable - it should indeed just happen.
When you notice it, it indicates a failure of some kind. Too many personalized greetings can be one indicator, and I´m sure there are others.
I´m not a fan of having someone unpack my bags although I don´t mind an escort to the room, since a lot of the rooms/suites I´ve been in in the past few years have hidden controls and switches and I´d rather have someone show me how to turn a light on versus having to call down and ask later on.
