As a paid upgrade, you have priority over all complementary upgrades, including Diamonds and Golds.

If you want to take a chance on a complementary upgrade, do NOT check any payment boxes. But as you noticed, it is hit or miss. If you want an almost guaranteed upgrade, check the box for payment. But you will be paying for the upgrade.

Thanks. My room rate was quite reasonable ($95) for this property and the upgrade to one of the larger 2 king rooms was only $15. I think I'll keep the box checked.
