WAW / KRK recap

I spent last weekend in Poland , flying on low cost DL MR from DTW.
Bus 175 is very easy , runs often , but crowded , takes app. 25 minutes to Central train station . Cabs 25-30 zlonty.
Money exchange rates at airport are poor value 2.6 zl / $1... Western Union across from Cultural Palace near train station 3.2 zl / $1 is much better.
Lunch at milkbar , 2 soups with large plate of meat , potatoes , cabbage, carrots , 2 small juice drinks : total less than $7 . Milk bars are goverment subsidzed simple cafes left over from communist era.
We flew to KRK on LOT- $50 ai /2 people OW , good flight .... 30zl cab ride airport to central KRK early on Sunday morning... light traffic so could be more expensive at other times. But you need to call for a cab ...do not take cabs waiting outside the terminal as price will be doubled. There is a bus but we did not take it. Last entry to Castle museum is at 3pm .
We rode late night train back to WAW . I do not recommend this, as train was late , slow ( almost 4 hours ) and terribly over crowded . without resereved 1st class seat you will have problem geting a seat as many student use train . Also train car numbering was not necessarily in numerical order.
Warsaw Uprising Museum was very good , if interested in WWII history !
Warsaw Old town is nice to stroll around .
We took 3+ hr. , 140 zl. city tour . Only 2 of us with guide and driver in 12 passenger bus . Good for first time visitors . Any hotel can arrange it . Pickup and drop off included. Cost is probably negotiable as this is low tourist season.
Weather is cold and overcast, do not expect to see the sun. Also if will be dark by 3:30 pm so do your sightseeing early in the day.
Most museums in WAW amd KRK are free on Sundays... but long lines .
Lots of shopping , resturants and nightlife east of Central train station.
All the people that we meet were friendly and helpful . English was commomplace in all tourist areas.
Fellow FT jason8612 has great info on FT and is an excellent resource on all things in Poland.
