When traveling with wine these days, I use padded, sealable bags which are filled with super-absorbent crystals (like you find in diapers) in case of breakage, then pack those with clothes etc. around for extra padding.
I've transported a couple of cases' worth in checked bags so far this year that way with no problems.
They literally call these things "wine diapers":
