You are exactly right. Delta.com thinks it is sorting the best fares for you, but leaves out tons of connections. It does not like to pair multi-cabins and if it does it will give you the highest Y price with your lowest F price. This is part of the reason I go to other booking engines to book flights. I think part of the problem that tricks up delta.com is if the first leg is a regional jet. If the first leg is mainline, you typically get a LOT more options. But, Im with the OP on this one. Major downfall of delta.com and Im sure many more impatient people just drop it and go to another site to book.
