Yes. At NRT (in fact also many other airports particularly the international gateways like SFO), the gate agent used to have two elite signs, marked very clearly in red background. One says GS/FC/1K, and the other says BC (sometines BC/1P). Each sign is located at the front of two separate lines. When the boarding starts, the GS/FC/1K have a clear path to the gate. The BC passengers are waiting in a neighboring line so they are not in the way of the GS/FC/1K. After the first line all board, the BC line passengers board. The system does allow a late arrival GS/FC/1K to cut in from the first line, but this seldome intereferes with the boarding and certainly does not delay the process. The lower elites and EC passengers board by zone, they do not line up in either elite line because they see clearly the two red signs are not for them. They form their separate line (thus the 3rd line) usually according to their zone number. Zone 1 passngers go first, zone 2 stand near the line, and higher zone passengers know it is not their turn so most of them do not get in this 3rd line. Almost no one has to push a lower rank passenger out in order to get to their higher priority position, everything goes smoothly.

What the new UA (old CO?) way is that there are two signs, elites and non elites. Elite includes so many different status but they all stand in the same line. But then the boarding order is according to the status, not to the order in a line. So we have this ridiculously chaotic process. I guess the super smart CO managers think that they would let a low elite feel great to allow them on the preferred line. But in reality they should still board after the higher status passengers. Since each passenger in the elite line does not have a big sign outside their cloth to indicate whether they are GS, FC. 1K, BC, 1P, 2P, credit card, or elite access day pass,... etc., each one who is eligible for the elite line do not know whether they are standing in front of a higher status person or not. So we end up with many lower rank elites blocking middle and higher rank ones and middle rank blocking higher ranks etc. When there is no information of which elite rank each of the other 300 passengers has, a elite can only fight for him/herself and try to move to the front of the elite line. The boarding at NRT used to be one of the most orderly and most efficient. Now it is like a zoo.
If the COUA management insist to continue this arrangement, I would like to make a suggestion. Each elite is given a hat with different colors indicating their status. Only people with such a hat can stand in the elite line, and only in the order of boarding.
