Absolutely NOT - and that is not the conclusion you should have drawn from the info given.
Your best bet is to check the seating chart online BEFORE 24 hrs. before your flight = Chances are very good a seat will have opened up. If not when you check in you may be assigned a seat or worst case you will get a seat at the gate.
They will always do a request for VDB - which you can accept as well.
