Barclays closed my account. Advice?

Last night, I tried to use my Barclays US Airways Mastercard to make an $8 grocery purchase. The transaction was declined. I called them to inquire why. It turns out my account has been closed. I had to wait until today to call back, as the department I needed was closed.

I just called again and talked with the correct department. They closed my account since after I appplied for it, I also applied for several other credit cards with other banks. Like many others on FT, I am looking for free miles and points. They deemed me a credit risk, and closed my account. I told him that I applied for several cards to get miles, and I am paying my balances in full. He told me I need to wait until the balances are all $0, then I can call back and try to get reconsidered.

I don't really care about the account. They only approved me for a $1,000 limit, so the card is pretty much useless. However, I am concerned about my 40,000 bonus miles, which were deposited into my DM account about 2 weeks ago. I am planning a trip to Europe that I would like to take in January in J. I should have enough miles tomorrow if there is a grand slam sweep tomorrow. I will be around 110,000 tomorrow then. However, if they take back my bonus, I will be at only about 70,000. Then I either have to go in Y (I'd rather not) or buy miles (which would be $600ish even with the double miles promo). I could wait until my balances are all $0 and try to call them back to reconsider, but J availability might be gone. Also, I'm not very interested in being their customer now.

When I was transferred to somebody who "knew", she said normally if the card is canceled the miles are forfeited. She couldn't give me any more info about my miles specifically. She gave me the number for US Airways DM and told me to call them. I figured it should be Barclays' call whether or not to take them back, as Barclays purchased them from US. I told her this, and she told me that US has the miles now. Thank you, I didn't know that. When I explained what I meant, she just kept talling me to call US.

Is there any reason to call US to ask? I figure there is no reason to expedite losing my miles. If I get miles from a GS sweep tomorrow, should I call to ticket my flights immediately? If they are taken back, would the reservation be canceled?

Has this happened to anybody else?
