Actually it wasn't a challenge at all. I was given the status without lifting a finger.
A while ago (I believe the beginning of summer) I received a letter with a Hilton HHonors gold card inside, good through March 2013. It said something to the effect that I was given gold status for being an Air Canada elite. It was totally unsolicited, though greatly appreciated
I'm also Marriott Silver and I actually prefer their program to Hilton's. Yes the latter comes with free internet, complimentary breakfast and room upgrades at check-in, but I find the Marriott properties are better overall. YMMV.
