As to one part of the OP question - while gogo isn't normally free, I did see in the Wash Post travel section yesterday that Gogo was offering 30 minutes free on most carriers from 11/23/11 to 1/2/2012 - look for a link on the main page when you fire up the browser on board the aircraft.
