"As soon as you can" means 24 hours ahead. That's exactly when the "Preferred Seats" also open up, for sale. So, is it better to check in with the poor seats, or wait until arrival at the airport in the hopes that better seats open up?

Sure, they'll take the middle seats if they have to. We're just trying to understand the system.
