I'm the same height as your wife and I can't reach it either. Back when I used to travel alone, I only brought what I could fit under my seat, but that area has shrunken quite a bit over the years. I'm not a heavy packer, but the underseat space in coach doesn't really cut it these days. I never asked for help, but after reading the comments posted on this issue over the years, I'm glad I don't have to travel alone anymore.
