I understand your frustration, having made an abortive visit to LHR this evening and have to return at 5.30 tomorrow morning.
The reality with fog is that LHR is essentially "full" and anything that reduces the flow-rate (amount of take-offs and landings) will have a significant effect. Add to that BA's dense European schedule, and aircraft and crew will be stranded all over the continent.
It's no surprise to me that BA would make a commercial decision to use the many fewer slots for long-haul traffic at the expense of short-haul.
Having said that, why is the UK always surprised by autumn and winter weather. We always struggle to manage weather events that happen every year like clockwork ...
