Things have certainly changed.

I used to roll up at check-in with my bike....not dismantled , four heavy panniers, fishing rod,small rucksack and a rolled up sleeping mat with tent poles inside. No status, flying both short haul and long haul on discounted economy tickets.

There never was a problem. Wouldn't like to try it nowadays.
