I hadn't thought about the cargo aspect of ferry flights. When I was last on CO99, I remember the captain saying that they almost always take off at or near MTOW with the fuel load they need to get to HKG, with the implication that freight often gets left behind. He said that in the HKG-EWR direction, this was always the case. With no passengers and no luggage, I would imagine that quite a bit of cargo could be loaded on a EWR-HKG ferry flight, probably up to whatever would fit volume-wise. I wonder how much this offsets the cost of fuel for the ferry flight?
