Welome to NZ Russ! Mini-DO's are held in AKL from time to time, especially as it's the main port of entry for the majority of overseas visitors. Also, I would guess more FTer's live in the AKL region than elsewhere in NZ.

Are you able to make it to the BHE DO next month? It's a nice part of the country and to save a few $$ you could either fly to WLG and catch the ferry to Picton or even train to WLG then ferry.
