I believe it is fair since it is an award ticket. If you have bought F ticket and got downgraded to J, then I would expect it to be at least greater than $1000 HKD if not more.

Two trips agao I told CX ground staff about breaking off my luggage zipper, and since I was outbound to China the next day they gave me $500 HKD. Needless to say I spent it on alcohol rather than on a new zipper....
