AMS > MLE

I live in the Netherlands and want to fly BA to Maldives. I appreciate there is no direct flight but would assume that the ticket with be AMS > LGW > MLE but when I put it in the BA.com system it comes up with an error stating:

Error
We are unable to find seats for your journey. The most common reasons for this are:

You may have requested a route that we do not operate at that time of year.
We may not fly to the destination you have chosen.
Your journey may require more than six flights; you can only book up to six flights on ba.com.


Has this been done to prevent people flying out to AMS to get a cheaper ticket to MLE or is this a technical error? (it's been like this for about 2 months!)
