Rate/product code - where does it come from?

Like many here, I obsessively check my upcoming reservations to see when they've dropped in price. On my most recent check, I saw that there was a value in the rate/product code box. That field is on the same page where you'd enter your contract ID, coupons, TA number, etc.

I only noticed it when I went to change a reservation. I checked the price when not signed in, and it was less than my reservation. But I signed in and put the exact same info in, and for some reason it didn't price out the same. That's when I noticed the rate code had a value. I have never put a value in here. But once I cleared the value and priced the reservation, THEN I got the lower rate.

Has anyone noticed this value being filled in before? It sounds like it's based off the class of car I'm renting, but if that were the case, it shouldn't be a user-editable field in the reservation.

It's already complicated enough checking a combination of rate codes + coupons. I think if I have to add rate codes into it as well, my head will explode
