It would be nice to know WHAT the buy-up price would be for comparison, so I called 1K line and it pretty much confirmed that they aren't combine-able, as you said, and that I was pretty much buying two one-way flights. She had no hard info about the buy-up price or how to try to do in on-line, but she was guessing it would be the same as the increase on the one-way fare (one way was A class).

So I guess I will check for NF>=2, book it in economy, see what the buy-up offer is, and if I don't like it just cancel the ticket. Seems like a lot of work to just find out the price.
