I bid several times for a 4-star in downtown Manhattan for end of Oct. Ended up at the Marriott WTC for $150/night, which included a Thursday. Weekend deals can be had for about the same or slightly less, but I didn't want to horse around with bidding for the Thursday night separate from the rest of the weekend.

I plan on using PL again for hotels.
