What I do notice is that North American 100% orange juice seems to taste a lot sweeter than 100% juice I get in the UK - perhaps that is part of the taste difference?

Oh, I know what else you sometimes find, but not in half decent restaurants - orange juice that comes out of a post-mix gun (like coke etc). That stuff is pretty nasty, but I wouldn't expect that in a restaurant at breakfast.
Those Hilton breakfast buffets throughout Europe, while usually having pretty good food, usually had really bad juice. I'm not sure if that's still the case since I no longer have status, so I'm not going to pay €30 to "enjoy" it when I can spend a couple a the patisserie or cafe down the street.
