I usually fly out of LGA and connecting through ORD.
It's always worked for me on UA (most recently SFO-LAS), where I switched from an evening flight on CO to a morning flight on UA. Switching airlines is extremely difficult and frustrating to do because each airline will tell you to start with the other airline. It took me 45 minutes but I eventually got CO to call UA and straighten the matter out, and I got on the earlier UA flight. The fare class rules apply, even on UA, if the ticket is on CO stock, which mine was.
